EC4P's Green Dot Trademark Guide

March 6th, 2019

The Green Dot Trademark is the license and financing symbol of a European network of industry-funded systems for the organisation of recovery, sorting and recycling of sales packaging. When you see the Green Dot on packaging it means that for such packaging, a financial contribution has been paid to a qualified national packaging recovery organisation.

Devised in Germany in the early 1990's the Green Dot (Der Grüne Punkt) was created to demonstrate the product manufacturers commitment to environmental initiatives by contributing to the cost of recovery and recycling of packaging materials and waste. However, the Green Dot symbol does not indicate that the package the symbol is displayed on is necessarily recyclable. Furthermore, even though the symbol is managed worldwide by PRO Europe (Packaging Recovery Organisation Europe), each nation tends to have its own version of the program leading to more confusion for manufacturers.
