Global single-use plastics bans, restrictions and penalties

September 10th, 2019
There has been a sharp rise in single-use plastics laws as well as reforms to many existing packaging regulations around the world. The EU has approved a Single-Use Plastics (SUPs) Directive which will put bans on certain SUPs by 2021 across EU Member States.

Many other countries around the world are adopting similar legislation including India, Philippines, Argentina, Mexico as well as US states California, New York and Hawaii. In addition, the US plans to release a federal packaging bill later this year which includes provisions to make producers responsible for packaging at its end of life.

Did you know:
  • Over 60 countries now have mandates which make producers responsible for single-use plastics including deposit refunds, recycling targets and product take-back regulations
  • In addition to new provisions covering single-use plastics the European Circular Economy policy and revised Waste Framework Directive have led to an increasing number of modulated fees for packaging (recycling fees in Italy can be 150% higher for non-recyclable packaging materials which increases the recycling costs from 150 to 369 Euros per tonne)
  • Some countries include jail terms within penalties for violations of single-use plastic regulations; Kenya has outlined fines of up to $38,000 and a jail term of up to four years

EC4P's webinar will give an overview of the developments in single-use plastics legislation (September 2019) including a summary of the EU Single-Use Plastics Directive and the draft US Federal Packaging Bill and will explain how your company can use EC4P to manage compliance with packaging and other end-of-life regulations across the world.
